Tips: What is the maximum length of the backbone cabling?

The maximum distances for backbone cabling will depend on the type of medium (twisted pairs, fiber optics) and the application. For example, for twisted-pair cable used in telephony systems (non-IP), up to 800 meters; for networking applications (voice or data), up to 100 meters.

In the case of fiber optics:

* Campus Backbone (OM1) ……….2 Km……….155 Mbps

* Campus Backbone (OM2) ……….550 m………1 Gbps

* Building Backbone (OM2) ……….300 m……….1Gbps

* Building Backbone (OM3) ……….300 m/ 100 m……….10 Gbps/ 100 Gbps

* Campus/ Building Backbone (OM4) ……….550 m / 150 m……….10 Gbps/ 100 Gbps

* Campus/ Building Backbone (OS1) ……….10 Km……….100 Gbps

* Campus/ Building Backbone (OS2) ……….10 Km……….100 Gbps
