Laws governing the development of ICTs

Often we need to analyze ratios or know the criteria that "drive" the development of Technologies in the field of Information Systems or Communications, especially when supporting an Investment Project.

At this point, it's wise to consult the "gurus" in this field. Here are some of the most recognized principles in the evolution of ICTs:

Moore's Law:

  • Cost: Every 18 months the price drops by half.
  • Computing capacity multiplies by 100 in 10 years.

Storage Law:

  • Cost: Every 12 months the price drops by half.
  • Storage capacity increases by 1000 in 10 years.

Gilder's Law:

  • Cost: Every 6 months the price drops by half.
  • Transmission capacity multiplies by 10000 in 10 years.

Metcalfe's Law:

  • The value of the communications network increases proportionally to the square of the number of users in the system.
